This character design was created in illustrator, then broken up in layers at the joints. All the joints have to line up perfectly or you will have problems in animation. It was then imported to After effects and created a humanoid structure, which was aligned to all the body parts. Next bones are added to the structure points, and then parented to the structures as well as the art work. When that's all set up you run the IK rigging script from Duik Bassel. Now it's ready to begin animation from pose to pose and animate in between the keyframes. Not a quick process, but it gives you the most flexibility for a 2D character rig.
